 札幌はもうすっかり寒くなり、紅葉がきれいな季節です。軽く「遊びに来てください」などと言えないのが悲しい今日この頃です。 後期が始まって、対面での授業も許されるようになってきました。ただ、教員目線だと、許されたからと言ってやるのか？と思ってしまいます。常にリスクを考え、何かあったときにどういう風に対応するのか、どうするのがベストなのか、、、と悩んでいます。 ただ、これまでオンラインでしか顔が見られていない学生たちが協力しあって実験をしていたり、楽しく会話をしていたりするのを見ることができるのはうれしいです。 冬が厳しいこの場所で、またウイルスが猛威を振るわないかどうか、心配です。なんとか楽しい大学生活を送ってほしいです。 Sapporo is getting colder and colder, and leaves are turning yellow and red everywhere. It is so sad that I cannot freely say "come and visit" anymore.  Our second semester started and some lectures are now conducted physically. However, we all have to think about the risks and how to minimize them. It is still certain what are the bests for my students.  By saying that, it is so good to see students are doing experiments together and just chatting together on campus.  Winter is harsh here and am very worried about the virus activity over the winter. I hope the students can have happy campus life for upcoming years.

道北へ行ってきました。最近ずっと行けていなかったので、久々に顔見知りの農家さんを巡れて良かった。 しかし私たちは単にお友達に会いに来たわけではなく、研究をしに来たわけです。 一生懸命、糞や土、堆肥、草、そして牛舎の壁からサンプルを取りました。これらからDNAを抽出して、微生物の多様性を見ていく予定です。 ゲリラ豪雨のような雨に降られたり、長時間の運転で疲れたりと、まあまあ大変でしたが、晴れ間の美しい空と、よく人に慣れた牛に癒された旅でした。 協力していただいた農家さんにフィードバックできるよう、実験をがんばります。 We went to the Northern part of Hokkaido. It was very nice to see some familiar farmers' faces here.  However, we were here not only to catch up with friends but came here to do some research.  We sampled cow dung, soil, grass, compost and dust on the wall (!). We are hoping to extract DNA out of them to look at microbial diversities.  There were some heavy rain moments and it was a long drive indeed. However, it was so nice seeing some beautiful blue sky and friendly cows. We are hoping to give them good feedback after working hard in the laboratory.
